Water Recycling for Commercial Car Washes: What Operators Should Know

How wash-water treatment works, why it matters for compliance, and the questions to ask any supplier.

Water recycling tanks: settling, oil separation, filtration and reuse

Water is both a cost and a compliance issue for any commercial wash. Pollution control boards have acted against washing centres operating without treatment — in a September 2025 reply to the National Green Tribunal, CPCB reported state board findings of unauthorised washing centres operating without effluent treatment plants.

What is in wash water?

Sand and grit, road film, oil and grease, and detergent residue. These must be separated before water is reused or discharged.

A typical treatment train

  1. Collection pit and settling — heavy solids drop out.
  2. Oil separation — floating oil and grease are removed.
  3. Filtration — finer particles are removed, often through media filters.
  4. Conditioning — odour control, softening or disinfection, depending on design.
  5. Storage and reuse — treated water returns to suitable wash stages; fresh water is commonly kept for the final rinse.

Compliance

MoEFCC has notified effluent standards for automobile service stations, bus depots and workshops (December 2019). Any discharge must meet the conditions of your State Pollution Control Board consent.

Questions to ask a supplier

  • What reuse percentage has been measured, under what conditions, and is there a test report?
  • How is sludge removed and disposed of?
  • What maintenance does the system need, and how often?

Be cautious of “zero discharge” or fixed water-saving claims that are not backed by test data for your configuration.
